Hamnerö
November 19, 2011
Väderöarna Bohuslän 111111-13 Although it was approaching the middle of November did the prolonged autumn that it was difficult to avoid even an overnight. The weather in the week before was quite stable, not so much sun, but unfortunately most haze and fog, but unusually mild and hardly any wind. So Heidi and I decided to finish the season as we started, in Fjällbacka. Lots of beautiful islands, decently protected and also - if the forecast was for the weekend - maybe time to get even further out ..
We skipped the club's pool workout this time and went from Malmo directly after work on Friday evening. The temperature was around zero on the way up but when we pulled into the parking lot at the beach south of Fjällbacka just after midnight, the sea was the frost away.
Once up the tent and down sleeping bags. A little windy but completely cloud-free and full moon ..

Hamnholmen
Woke up just before eight to a narrow tear in my sleeping bag was fixed blizzard inside. It certainly was not much down that leaked but it got really spread everywhere! Well, duct tape, decontamination and shipping forecast - 2-6 m / s east, slightly rising and turning to the south during the day. Perfect for Väderöarna words ..
Quick breakfast and late into the port of Fjällbacka for launching. Already ten we were in the kayaks and paddled west. Mostly just a few degrees above freezing, but with little wind in the back.

In Väderöarna

Hamnerö
Below Valö, between Fotsillarna, past the gas islands to the first stop on Hamnholmen just south of Vedholmen. Not an easy landing place, but perfect location for the toilet and before klementinpaus jump over to the Weather Islands. Out in the fjord was the first very quietly but gradually built the lake in the rear and we met the old swell from the southwest, up to 70-80 cm. Fine paddling over and we were out at Hamnerö around ettblecket. Just before we got there appeared a curious seal up to welcome you!
Deep inside the bay are two old fishing huts, although without water, stove or bathroom but very cozy and free to borrow - Assistance Association! We brought up all the stuff in the bigger house, chanterelle soup and cheese sandwich for lunch.

Väderöbod
Previously, the majority of the islands out here bird and sälskyddade, some only during spring-summer, second all year round. But after the formation of Koster Marine National Park last year has eased some restrictions, even down here. So since there were still a few hours of daylight left we decided to take the turn out of Väderöbod too.
First southward around the bowl Holmen and Large Klåvskär before we sighted east towards the high lighthouse. Some messy lake and some streams between the islands. It is usually very difficult to go ashore here, but there are actually two narrow bays and a tiny port on the steep island. Maybe not exactly easy, but under the circumstances, acceptable landing ..
Väderöbod is probably the lighthouse which is the most secluded in Sweden and one can only imagine what the conditions were here in the past. Think the record for the waves is around 13 meters with significant wave height of 7.7 meters .. Hrm .. Hursom, great to run around the rocks and check out the small holiday village.

Nature Reserve

Small port

Sälspaning
Since it was still entitled cloudy so we missed the sunset and noticed first that the clock is gone when it was getting dark. We could at least visit to the seals on the western tip before it was full speed home. It's more than four kilometers back to Hamnerö and we did not want darkness to navigate all the way. Missed one case it was a piece to the nearest country as well ..
Back at the sheds, we managed with some sort of ultra-fast clean-up, maybe not directly asked, but with a distinctly refreshing effect, before cooking. First Warm and cold as resuscitation and then pasta as a main course. We could probably keep us awake for more than eight in the evening this time, using the tea lights and stugmys. When we then went to bed the wind had turned down towards the south and healthy in something. Now is really vinade wind around the corner is not the best pillow on the Weather Islands, especially this time of year, but more than two miles of paddling made us sleep well anyway ..

Back

Saturday evening

Moon, early Sunday morning
big picture
I was a bit worried about weather developments, and had set the clock at just before six, to listen to early shipping forecast. But the 3-8 m / s west meant that we probably did not need to book your taxi home and it was easy to snooze on some hours to ..
Coated Pall me to end up in a short morning walk, the sun had not risen yet, but the moon was high in the sky. Back for a little morning coffee in the house and then hung Heidi with a longer turn around the island. Less wind than expected and now the sun had even penetrated the cloud bank over the country. The whole Väderö archipelago consists just as Koster of gray granite and gneiss with interspersed black dolerite dykes unlike Fjällbacka pink red rocks. Much walking and klättervänligt ..

Breakfast in the sun

Time to leave ..
Back at the sheds, we ate breakfast out of the wind against the house wall. Packing, a little cleaning and then calm paddling against Storön, three kilometers due north.
We pulled the kayaks at the small beach at the head of the bay and walked into the village. Arriving at the world body said that if we hurried we would probably catch up in the lookout, too. The mountain top is quite steep but it's nothing compared to the stairs (ladder is actually probably more accurate) in the tower. Hursom, the view from there is certainly worthwhile, and there was little repair of the weather station so we also got a nice chat with the view!

Carrot cake & chocolate
Down at the inn where they very well behaved and did not flinch when two moderate skruffiga yellow dry suits knocked and asked for hot chocolate and carrot cake. Tasted good and nice to sit a little civilized indoors in the heat for a while - recommended!
I have passed Fjällbacka a number of occasions over the years but in fact only been out here once before. It requires a pretty decent and stable forecast for that one should venture out and it is not always succeed in the timing of the weekly club rides. But now it was just the right conditions and just the right amount of people out here ..

Difficult to navigate ..?

Eastward again
We had a bit left so paddling around two we went back to the kayaks again. Out in the fjord, it was still a bit old lake left but wind and sun in the back gave a feast of paddling! A good way out asked Heidi if there were seals so far from land as well? Nah, I said, it is quite exceptional in this deep water - just while there appeared a hand just in front of us ..

Around Lyngö
big picture
We sighted just south of the lighthouse South Sister and passed between Lyngö and covered lakes. The plan was to go ashore for a late afternoon lunch at Kyrkogårdsön before the sun went down. Heidi found a small crevice in the lee way on the hill and we ate Cosco and cheese sandwich while we put the final finish on the weekend burn.

In Trybergsholmen

Just in time for the sun disappeared, we sat in the kayaks again for the final stage. It gets a little cold during coffee breaks but as soon as you come off you get the heat up quickly again. In Trybergsholmen, between Hjärterö and Valö, into Fjällbacka. Slowly and almost noiselessly we glided over the still water through a beautiful archipelago. Incredible kayaking and a perfect ending to the season for this year ..!
Once there, it was packing and loading in the dark before the trip down to Malmö again. Not exactly cool but a bit grim before the car heating started ..

Fjällbacka

In Malmö again ..
Väderöarna may not be the first thing you think of in the middle of November and we were the very last quite uncertain whether we would dare to go out. The final decision was actually first on Hamnholmen when we saw how the lake was. Now admittedly Fjällbacka archipelago not entirely too bad to paddle around in, but to come all the way out attracts the more ..
A little cool and cloudy on Saturday, but warmer and more or less sun all day Sunday, tailwind both print and on the way back. Inge mosquitoes, incredibly beautiful weather out on the islands, cozy booths and a totally magical paddling home. A good weekend then ..
Paddled 23 +18 km.

oh looks nice out! Must also be reached by kayak!

Agrees with the comments above!
November 20, 2011 13:38
Many thanks for all the comments! If you only succeed in timing the weather is reasonable I think spring and autumn is the best time in the archipelago, O especially on the west coast actually. While Blekinge and the eastern archipelagos often feels somewhat bleak after all, the green disappears, the Bohuslän cliffs just even more dramatic ..
Then it works mostly with almost the same stuff over the summer, some warmer clothes and some extra sleeping bag maybe .. Pure winter paddling and camping in below freezing requires considerably more experience and that you are upgrading virtually all the equipment - can often be more focus on the expedition than paddling for me.

Ah huh good to dream out there again! Goa pictures as usual

Nice story, great place and great pictures.
-Even if it seems to make it unnecessarily difficult for themselves by starting with paddling east from Fjällbacka;)

Haha, probably thought it was a bit slow in the beginning, must have sat compass bakofram or something .. :) Best to change to the west in order to shorten the trip a little ..

Thank you Jim! Well it seemed like a fitting conclusion to the season. Unfortunately doubtful if we have time to issue any more now before Christmas, will try to cheer me up with a bit of kayak building instead ..

This weekend it was 30 meters in average wind speed at weather Islands ....

I was actually inside and looked at SMHI last night too ..! Oh also we had a bit draughty down here, we probably are not really in a significant wave height of more than 7 feet - almost like the record ..
But now that you've been there, one can easily imagine what it was at Väderöbod old days when one could take the spiral staircase in the old Heidenstam chamber and pull the sinker. Or worse, climb the rigging on any råmastare on the way into the night .. It was a little saltier guys at that time.

Hi, Eric! It will probably not quite as exciting this time unfortunately ..
I'm pretty pleased with my age so it will be only minor changes, a few enhancements and a few cosmetic adjustments, otherwise essentially the same kayak. Maybe a different color for that joke to it but mostly because it's fun to build ..
However, thinking about while laying out a more detailed description of the building in particular on the various solutions I've worked over the years, type skeg, hatches, seat and rim, linfästen mm. With how to do it but most of all spray behind, why I do it. So more of my opinions on kajakers function and form ..
More on that later ..

There are a few highlights such as when the latest issue of Ocean Racing's on-line or when Ulf J updating their building blog ;-)
